“Snow” and “Maui” are two words not often found in the same sentence. Believe it or not, it can snow on Maui island, but not like you might think. With an average yearly low temperature in the 70s, Maui is too warm to experience blankets of snow, even in the middle of the winter months.
The Only Cases of Snow in Maui History
Because of the elevation of Mount Haleakala, it is possible for snow to fall on and around its peak, but it doesn’t really stay there long, and it doesn’t even happen every year. Other mountains in the state of Hawaii can also get white caps, but Haleakala is just barely tall enough for the rare occurrence to happen.
Every few years, you may look up to the peak of Mount Haleakala and notice that there’s a little bit of snow up there, but don’t count on it as a regular sight. Since the mountain reaches just over 10,000 feet, snow can just barely show up. To compare it to other Hawaiian mountains, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa are both over 13,000 feet at their peaks, with Mauna Kea being the taller of the two. Going outside Hawaii entirely, the highest elevation of any American mountain is that of Denali—formerly called Mount McKinley—which reaches a stunning elevation of 20,310 feet, more than twice the height of Haleakala.
What is the Coldest Recorded Temperature on Maui?
Due to its position relative to the equator and other factors like ocean air current, Maui rarely reaches the 60s in Fahrenheit. That is, when you measure at population centers and other places where high altitude throws the averages way off. The Kahului Airport isn’t too high above sea level, making it a good measurement point. At that location, the National Weather Service has only recorded 60 degrees fahrenheit a small handful of times, but the temperature there has been recorded as low as 59 degrees fahrenheit. This, of course, is not nearly enough to cause snow.
