Septic Maintenance in Maui

When you have your own waste management system installed on your property, it can be a huge benefit. However, without proper maintenance, your septic system can quickly become a stressful mess. When you need help deciding on what maintenance your septic tank needs, a professional team is invaluable.

Why is Septic Tank Maintenance Important

Your septic tank may be a pretty closed system that takes care of waste breakdown over the years, but it can’t be left unattended. This is how sewage leaks and backups occur, potentially contaminating your property or even your water. Also, your septic system is designed to last decades — how many decades is often determined by how well you take care of it! To delay the expense of a new septic system as long as you can, invest in the health of your current tank.

Signs You Need Septic Maintenance Or Inspection

One of the main ways your septic tank can be maintained is through regular septic pumping. The frequency of pumping can be determined by your home’s water usage and waste production — something a professional can help you estimate. On average, your tank should be pumped about every three years. This act is essential to maintaining safe levels of waste inside the tank. When it gets too full, you could be looking at wastewater overflow or even leaking sewage!

Besides timing out your pumping schedule, you should be on the lookout for signs that your tank is getting full. As mentioned above, wastewater can run out of room and escape in larger quantities if the tank is fuller than normal. This could result in puddled water in the lawn or extra lush areas you can’t explain. Other signs of full septic tanks include:

  • Foul odors outside or from the drains
  • Slow moving drains in the kitchen or bathroom
  • Frequent drain clogs or trouble

As soon as you notice these issues, time is of the essence. If your tank is nearing its limit, you need a professional to pump or clean out the area. Once the experts are there, they can recommend a more frequent pumping schedule or other maintenance tactics to implement.

DIY Septic Maintenance

Don’t worry! You don’t need to get down in the grime to maintain your septic system! The septic maintenance habits you can form in your household are actually rather simple. If your septic tank has to deal with all the consequences of your drains and water usage, simply control those things better!

You can install low-flow water fixtures to reduce the amount of water entering the septic system. You can (and should) be more aware of the things going down your drains too. Be careful to only send things into your septic tank that are meant to be naturally broken down. If you use your drains like a trash can, your system will suffer. These are some things that should NOT go down your drain:

  • Grease/oil
  • Non-flushable wipes, such as baby wipes or other wet wipes
  • Photographic solutions
  • Hygiene products, diapers or paper towels
  • Dental floss
  • Cigarette butts
  • Coffee grounds
  • Cat litter
  • Medicines

You should also remember that the soil over your leech field (or drain field) should be cared for properly. You should not park vehicles on this part of your property, allow rainwater drainage to rush over it or plant deep-rooted plants too close to it.
